Book Rec. - Sept. 19, 2020

Book Rec - Pride by Ibi Zoboi

With new characters in modern day Brooklyn, author Ibi Zoboi retells Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. Zuri Benitez lives with her family in a neighborhood that is experiencing gentrification. Zuri is Afro-Latina, a poet, and opposed to the changes around her following the Darcy family’s arrival in the house across from her family.

My friend Brandi (@brandi.voigt.fox) let me borrow a couple of books right before COVID shut everything down, so I read Pride in March. You can see other books that Brandi recommends at #whatdoesthefoxread. I mentioned this on July 4th when I posted about the book How the García Girls Lost Their Accents, but for the past few years, I’ve focused on reading nonfiction and textbook style literature. The fictionalized story of Pride communicated truth differently as the power of narrative showed what is happening in gentrified neighborhoods through the eyes of an Afro-Latina teenager. I loved the poetry throughout the novel and couldn’t put this book down. Have you read Pride?
